ORLANDO, Fla. — Temporary Protected Status for many Salvadoran residents in the U.S. ends Wednesday, Sept. 9—just two months after about 300,000 Haitians lost TPS protections nationwide, including tens of thousands in Florida.
Florida has one of the nation’s largest Haitian populations, with an estimated 158,000 Haitian TPS holders before the July termination.
Beyond South Florida, Central Florida counties—Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Volusia, Brevard, Lake, Sumter, Marion and Polk—have significant Haitian communities and small businesses that rely on them as customers and workers.

Salvadoran TPS deadline looms
El Salvador’s TPS—the longest-running in U.S. history—is set to expire Wednesday, putting roughly 170,000 Salvadorans nationwide at risk of losing work authorization.
Because no termination notice appeared in the Federal Register by July, some attorneys say protections could automatically extend for six months, though employer systems still reflect the Sept. 9 cutoff.
