MELBOURNE, Fla. — Hundreds are expected to show their solidarity with Orlando Friday evening in Brevard County.
LGBT organization Space Coast Pride is hosting a candlelight vigil in Melbourne's Eau Gallie Square at 7 p.m.
The Pulse shooting is a tragedy that has resonated throughout the community, and Space Coast Pride is asking everyone to come together in peace, healing and hope. Performers, faith leaders, local officials and the family of one of the 49 victims killed in the shooting, are expected in Melbourne Friday.
Space Coast Pride President Lexi Wright said there was a public outcry for an event like this one.
Wright told me when she learned of the tragedy in Orlando, her first reaction was shock.
But she said that gave way to a sense of responsibility.
Wright said the shooting targeted a specific group, and she said by allowing any segment of the community to be treated differently, to be given fewer rights, dehumanizes them.
Officials said the vigil is about remembering the victims and all those touched by the senseless crime.
