ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Strong winds knocked down power lines along with several trees across Central Florida Thursday night. Lightning also caused a fire at an apartment complex in Seminole County.
"It sounded like a fire cracker, like an M80, I saw a spark didn't think anything of it," said victim Jackie Rivera.
The fire started in the attic of the Verandahs Apartments on Foxhill Circle near Apopka shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday. The fire damaged two units at the complex.
Just a few miles away a massive oak tree crashed into the roof of a home off Hiawassee Road in Orange County.
"I heard this crack, crack, and I now know it was the branch breaking," said neighbor Kwesi Patterson.
In Longwood, strong wind also knocked down a tree on Wild Oak Circle near Wekiva Springs Road. A large tree also almost crashed into an apartment complex in South Daytona in Volusia County. Several other trees falling down were also reported across the region on Thursday.
Strong wind caused some scaffolding on the outside of a building to collapse in New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County. Crews had to tear down what was left because it was too dangerous to leave up.
In Polk County, a possible tornado knocked down several power lines in Lakeland leaving hundreds of people without power. Crews had to close down part of 98 South near Polk State College to repair the lines.
Despite the damage caused by the storms, there were no reports of any serious injuries across the region.
