VERO BEACH, Fla. — A German tourist is in the hospital after she was bitten by a shark off the coast of Vero Beach.
A lifeguard said he ran into the water on Wednesday after he heard the woman scream.
He pulled her onto the sand and called 911.
Officials believe it was either a large bull shark or tiger shark.
Eyewitnesses said she had about a 12-inch gash on her leg.
"It was from a foot above her knee to half her calf was just gone," said eyewitness Michael Curran.
The woman was airlifted to a nearby hospital.
All beachgoers were ordered out of the water after the shark bite.
