Cosmopolitan magazine is facing criticism on social media after tweeting about a weight loss “success story” that didn’t involve exercise.
What it did involve was cancer.
The magazine on Monday tweeted a link to an article titled “How This Woman Lost 44 Pounds Without Any Exercise.”
The article told the story of Simone Harbinson who “tested positive for malignant carcinoid tumor of the appendix” in addition to being diagnosed with a severe kidney infection and other issues.
Harbinson underwent several surgeries and suffered multiple complications. During the process, she lost nearly 50 pounds.
Twitter and Facebook users took to social media outlets to express shock that the magazine would consider cancer a diet plan. The tweet was deleted after the backlash was already underway.
Here’s what a few people said about the tweet:

According to @Cosmopolitan, if you want to lose weight, all you need to do is get cancer! Oh, it's that simple?

Cosmopolitan has not commented on the tweet. The headline for the story on the magazine's website was changed to "A Serious Health Scare Helped Me Love My Body More Than Ever."
Cosmo updated their story and deleted that tweet because apparently framing cancer as a hot new weight loss trend was *NOT* a great idea pic.twitter.com/pho3pePZO6
