Dramatic video shows students tossed around after Ohio school bus crashes, rolls on side

A scary video released by the Ohio State Highway Patrol shows the moment of impact when a Perry County school bus was involved in a crash last year.

On Dec. 19, a Ford Mustang ran a red light in Thornville and ran into the side of the school bus, according to an accident report filed by the Highway Patrol.

The collision sent the bus spinning and rolling onto its side, WBNS reported.

The bus also slid off the road, striking a guardrail before it stopped, CNN reported.

The bus was carrying 30 high school students to the Mid-East Vocational School in Zanesville, the cable network reported.

Eight students and the 74-year-old bus driver were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, according to CNN. The driver of the Mustang, Joseph Thornton,42, of Lancaster, suffered serious injuries, including a broken back, according to the accident report.

“It really reiterates the importance of doing your safety drills and taking your drills more seriously,” Northern Local School District Superintendent Tom Perkins told WSYX in December. “I will see that bus in my dreams for years to come. It’s the worst thing I could see as a superintendent and as a parent. That’s not an image I’m going to remove.”
