Jan. 4 marks its “end of life date” where the company said its legacy software “will no longer reliably function,” The New York Times reported.
The last version of the BlackBerry operating system was launched in 2014, CNN reported.
The classic technology will not be able to send a text message or call 911, but it is not all BlackBerry’s decision to send the device to the realm of eight-track tapes and rotary phones.
Cellphone companies are dropping 2G and 3G this year forcing, the device’s retirement.
But not all BlackBerry-branded devices will be bricked. Those that run Android software will still function, CNN reported.
The company itself hasn’t made the devices since 2016, but licenses the name with other companies to produce the more up-to-date gadgets.
