Florida police officers help pay Walmart layaway bills for 26 customers

DADE CITY, Fla. — Attention, Walmart shoppers: Your layaway balance is now zero.

That was the message a west-central Florida police department had for 26 people who had layaway accounts at a Walmart in Dade City, WFLA reported.

Chief James Walters, of the Dade City Police Department, said his officers, with help from community members, paid off the accounts, which totaled more than $4,300, the television station reported. He relayed the news to each customer by telephone, WTSP reported.

“Each call made a lasting memory, not only for the recipients, but the givers, as well,” Walters said in a Facebook post.

Walters said some of the money was donated anonymously by “community partners,” which “allows us to give back to our citizens in a number of ways at Christmas time.”
