Robert Castro, 26, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, according to St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office online booking records.

Fort Pierce Police Department Sgt. Charles Donnon said Castro called 911 and told them “what he had done,” TCPalm.com reported.

“He called 911 and he said, ‘I just murdered my ex-girlfriend,’” Donnon said.

Police responded to a residence in Fort Piece at about 3:15 a.m. EDT after receiving a call about a domestic incident, WPBF-TV reported.

Officers arriving at the scene found the body of a woman in the driveway, according to the television station. The woman had been shot, WPBF reported.

Investigators said Castro originally fled the scene after the alleged shooting, WPEC-TV reported.

Castro did not identify himself when he called 911, TCPalm.com reported.

“We were able to, through our investigation, have others familiar with him listen to it, immediately identify him,” Donnon told the website. “During the call, he made the comment that the only other person at the house was him and his son, and they share a son in common.”

Police said they did not believe the 4-year-old boy witnessed the shooting. He was not harmed and family members took custody of the child, Donnon said.

Castro later turned himself in to the sheriff’s office, according to WPEC.

“We’re really working on the backstory now as to why this occurred, what prompted it, and following up,” Donnon told TCPalm.com. “So we have the full picture of what occurred, why it occurred and how it occurred.

“We still have a lot to do in this case. There’s a lot more investigation going on right now.”

Police did not release the name of the victim.
