DES MOINES — An Iowa woman is accused of placing two cats into a washing machine and turning the appliance on, killing one of the felines, authorities said.
Maria Elisabeth Phillips, 57, of Des Moines, was arrested Friday and charged with animal torture and animal abuse, according to Polk County online court records.
According to court records, Phillips allegedly placed the animals into a washing machine on Tuesday to punish them for fighting with each other, WHO-TV reported.
One cat died from its injuries, while the other animal suffered from head trauma and water in its ears, the television station reported.
Phillips was arrested by the Des Moines Police Department and booked into the Polk County Jail, online records show.
