PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Rhode Island man pleaded guilty in federal court to charges that he schemed to defraud Home Depot out of approximately $600,000 in tools and building supplies.
The U.S. Attorney in Rhode Island announced the guilty plea in a news release, saying that Luiyi Taveras-Garcia admitted to taking part in the scheme that used stolen or fraudulently created credit card accounts to buy more than $600,000 in building, roofing, electrical, plumbing and other contractor supplies. Taveras-Garcia bought the supplies from Home Depot stores in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Taveras-Garcia admitted to a federal judge that be bought items to use in his roofing business from another person involved in the scheme, who bought the items from the Home Depot using stolen credit cards, the justice department said.
The alleged co-conspirator, identified as Abel Bier Romero, is awaiting trial on multiple charges in connection with the scheme, including wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, WPRI reported.
Taveras-Garcia is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 15.
