GARNER, N.C. — A 7-year-old North Carolina girl is dead after pit bulls attacked the child and her mother in Garner, authorities said.
According to WTVD and WNCN, the attack occurred about 6 p.m. Tuesday outside a home on Roan Drive. The girl and her mother, who were taking care of their neighbors’ dogs while the owners were away, were in the backyard of the dogs’ home at the time of the attack, Garner police said in a Facebook post.

The girl and her mother, who suffered serious injuries, were rushed to a nearby hospital, the post read. The child later died, and her mother is now in stable condition, police said.
Wake County Animal Control took both dogs to the county shelter, according to the Facebook post.
Authorities are still trying to determine what caused the attack, police said.
