The pope acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic has put a strain on some relationships and that couples who are having challenges can and should ask for help, The Associated Press reported.

The comments were part of a letter written to married couples that was released to mark a Catholic feast day that celebrates Jesus’ family on Sunday.

He said the ongoing lockdowns and quarantines are forcing people to spend more time together but all that time can and will test family dynamics and limits.

“Pre-existing problems were aggravated, creating conflicts that in some cases became almost unbearable. Many even experienced the breakup of a relationship,” the pope wrote.

But he urged couples to “Remember also that forgiveness heals every wound” and that the three most important words in a marriage are “Please, thanks and sorry.”

The letter and address marked the midway point of a yearlong celebration of the family, called Amoris Laetitia Family Year that will culminate in June in Rome during a family rally, the AP reported.
