McGrath first appeared on “Sesame Street” in 1969 as a neighbor, Bob Johnson. According to Variety, McGrath was on the show over five decades and for about 47 seasons. His final appearances on the show were in 2017 but he still made public appearances at events on behalf of “Sesame Street.”

McGrath was featured several times in musical performances, including “People in Your Neighborhood” and “Sing, Sing a Song,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

McGrath was born on June 13, 1932, in Ottawa, Illinois, according to Variety. He studied music at the University of Michigan and then at the Manhattan School of Music. He married his wife, Ann Logan Sperry, in 1958.

“Sesame Street” cast member Alan Muraoka paid tribute to McGrath after learning the news on Instagram, according to CNN.

“Words cannot begin to express what Bob meant to me: a role model, a mentor, a friend. His kindness and wicked sense of humor were such a joy,” Muraoka said.

McGrath is survived by his wife, Ann, their three daughters and two sons, and their eight grandchildren, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
