Eye on the Tropics

System near Florida Straits likely to become 2020′s first tropical system by Saturday

An area of low pressure over the Florida Straits may develop into a tropical depression or tropical storm within the next two days. This is the system we’ve been watching all week long but is now coming together over the Florida Keys.

Conditions are becoming more favorable as wind shear (really fast upper-level winds) relaxes a bit and will allow this system to become a little more organized.

Read today’s local forecast: On Saturday, showers will be more likely along the coast, as the low-pressure system meanders near the Bahamas.

We are not expecting a fully symmetric, strong storm. Storms during this time of the year tend to be asymmetric and messy in their organization, wind, and rain location. In fact, most of this system’s convection could be shifted to it’s east.

Earlier this week, I mentioned the possibility of this system well far away from Central Florida, which could bring us a sunnier weekend and the rain chances originally forecast could be diminished. It is looking like this is what will exactly happen for our area. So far there is only a 20 percent chance of showers, and they mainly should be focused over Brevard and extreme east Osceola counties, perhaps with a couple of showers escaping to southern Volusia County. South Florida expects to see more rain and storms from this system on Friday then winding off on Saturday.

What do they mean? Disturbance, depressions, tropical, subtropical storms, hurricanes

The forecast for this system remains the same. It will stay over the Eastern Atlantic, perhaps becoming more organized and stronger. It will not affect the continental U.S., including Florida. Central Florida residents should not worry about this system.

If this system is named, it would make the sixth consecutive year that there is a storm named before the official start of the season. Arthur is the first name in this year’s list

Hurricane season officially starts June 1 and ends November 30.
