PLANT CITY, Fla. — Two lanes of Interstate 4 in Hillsborough County are shut down due to a possible sinkhole, and traffic is backing up on the major artery (see map).
The Department of Transportation on Tuesday closed the left and center eastbound lands of I-4. The region has been plagued with depressions in the ground in recent days.
Eyewitness News learned that seven sinkholes have appeared in the Plant City area. They began forming on Monday and are impacting county-owned roads.
County crews are on the scene to test the locations as well as other suspected sinkhole locations. The crews will close sections of the roads as necessary.
Officials say roads are open to local traffic up to the closures.
Along with the I-4 lane closures these seven sinkholes have prompted the shutdown of parts of the following roads:
• Chitty Road between Sam Allen Road and Thonotosassa Road (detour is Thonotosassa Road to Cork Road to Sam Allen Road).
• Drawdy Road between Trapnell Road and Holloway Road (detour is Holloway Road to Turkey Creek Road to Trapnell Road).
• Lone Oak Road between Drawdy Road and Turkey Creek Road (detour is Holloway Road to Turkey Creek Road to Trapnell Road).
• Mott Road between Gavin Road and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard (detour is Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard to Gallagher Road to Gavin Road).
• Forbes Road between Ward Road and State Road 574 (detour is Ward Road to Tanner Road to S.R. 574 to Forbes Road).
• Forbes Road between Jerry Smith Road and Downing Street (detour is Sydney Road to Sydney Dover Road to MLK Boulevard to Forbes Road).
• Trapnell Road between Mud Lake Road and Sam Astin Road (detour is Mud Lake Road to Johnson Road to Sam Astin Road).
