BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — The health department said the Cocoa Beach pier is in the all-clear on Friday for the second time in June.
Ocean water samples showed dangerous levels of fecal bacteria early last week, according to the health department. The health department searched the pier's sewage system on Friday and found no leaks. They said the bacteria could be caused by an increase in swimmers, surfers, fishing, and birds.
A surfer at the Cocoa Beach pier said he isn't convinced with the health department's findings.
"I'm not sure what it is, but it's preventing me from surfing. I know that for a fact," said a surfer.
WFTV researched archives of records from the health department that dated back through the year 2000 and there were no bacteria level concerns until 2007. Since then, it's been a problem every summer, officials said.
