Downtown Orlando residents concerned over proposed senior housing project

ORLANDO, Fla. — Residents of a luxury condominium tower in downtown Orlando are worried that a proposed low-income senior housing complex near them could lower their property values.

The “Star Tower” on South Osceola Avenue has been surrounded by construction for years.

Residents there say a new project called “Mariposa Groves” threatens to block their views, leading to lower property values for the condo owners.

Star Tower residents expressed their concerns at a virtual city planning board meeting Tuesday morning.

“It’s not only Star Tower...the entire neighborhood will be affected,” one resident said during the meeting.

However, most of the planning board members were not swayed by the residents’ pleas.

“If you build anything of any height, you’re going to be in front of something in downtown,” board member Justin Hannah said.

The proposed 138-unit tower will still have to be approved by the full Orlando City Commission.
