LEESBURG, Fla. — Lake County school leaders are working to accommodate a huge influx of students choosing the Lake Virtual online learning option on the first day of classes.
Students returned to school in Lake County on Monday. Many students wore masks at Beverly Shores Elementary.
There was also a lot of activity at Carver Middle School as well.
The district says some Lake County parents waited until the last minute to make the decision to go digital.
One-hundred teachers have been transferred to Lake Virtual to help with the new students.
Officials also said more changes could be made.

So far, the district said it has handed out 15,000 Chromebooks since April.
More shipments will arrive this week.
The goal is to make sure that every student is able to get a device.
So far, officials said 3,000 virtual students have schedules and they're working to accommodate the remaining students.

Officials said since virtual school is self-paced, so there is no penalty for students who don’t start on the first day.
