Inmate's Family Talks About Alleged Officer Abuse

ORLANDO, Fla.,None — Just two days ago, two Orange County Corrections officers were arrested and accused of beating up Beatrice Nickson's 19-year-old grandson, Isiah Nickson.

"My thoughts were I wanted to know why they did that," said Nickson.

The Seminole County woman admits her grandson hasn't been on the right track but she says he didn't deserve what happened in the Orange County jail.

Eyewitness News reported Friday when corrections officers Jose Martinez-Ayala and Alton Mercer were arrested and charged with battery for abusing Nickson earlier this month.

Investigators say the 19-year-old who was in a cell for inmates with mental health and behavior problems wouldn't give up a juice box.

"If we hadn't gone over there to visit, we wouldn't have known and he had this knot on his head. We asked him and he said they came in Monday and beat me up," explained Nickson.

Nickson says she didn't even know there was an investigation into the incident until she saw the arrests on the news. She was relieved to see action was taken.

"I said thank God because I just felt like they needed arresting for going in there beating him up and I knew they understood he didn't have no good mind," said Nickson.

The corrections officers have been on unpaid leave since the investigation began.
