POLK COUNTY, Fla. — One person was killed early Monday in a house fire in Mulberry, Polk County Fire Rescue said.
Firefighters arrived at the home in the 5400 block of Water Oak Court at about 2:50 a.m. and found the home fully engulfed in flames, officials said.
A neighbor told emergency crews that someone lived in the home and despite the flames and choking smoke, firefighters went inside to try and find the resident, PCFR said in a media release.
“Conditions got too dangerous to be inside and the incident commander ordered all crews to exit the structure,” the release said.
Firefighters focused on putting out the flames from outside the house and once it was safe to go back inside, crews found a body in the living room, officials said.
The Bureau of Fire and Arson Investigations was investigating the cause of the fire and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the death.
