Teen wakes to learn girlfriend died in crash that injured him, 1-year-old

PORT ST. JOHN, Fla. — A teen girl was killed when she and two others were struck by a car in Port St. John Tuesday night, according to Brevard County Fire Rescue.

Hayley Johnson, 16, and her boyfriend, Dale Lambert, 19, were babysitting the girl's niece when they were struck by a car while walking down Curtis Boulevard Tuesday night.

Hayley was hospitalized in critical condition and later died.

Lilith Elis, 1, who was in a stroller at the time of the crash, was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, where she's listed in serious condition, according to Florida Highway Patrol officials.

Lambert was taken to Parrish Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition.

The driver of the car, Bobbi Bolash, 42, said she didn't see the three of them walking on the road.

"The driver of the vehicle did not see them, struck all three of them as a result. The female was pronounced deceased at the hospital," FHP Lt. Channing Taylor said. "She is very shaken up. She didn't see them. The environmental factors out here were definitely working against everybody."

Troopers said Johnson and Lambert were wearing dark clothing as they walked along the dark stretch of road.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Lambert told Channel 9 everything happened so fast. He said he never saw the car and was knocked unconscious from the impact.

"It tore my heart out when I found out my girlfriend passed away," he said. "It just happened out of nowhere and we didn't see the headlights, and it felt like, boom, the car just hit us."

Lambert said he and Hayley had just left a convenience store and were walking along the roadway because they couldn't keep the stroller moving on the grassy shoulder.

Channel 9 found there are no sidewalks in that area of Curtis Boulevard. When the road was constructed, they weren't required.

"I told her right before it happened she was an amazing person, and that I'm never leaving her side," said Lambert.

The driver has not been cited.
