9 Investigates: DeLand paramedic convicted of child porn still has license

9 Investigates discovered a paramedic convicted on several child porn charges in 2014 still has a valid paramedic's license.

The Florida Department of Health filed a complaint against Jamie Maxwell, who lived in DeLand when he was charged, but his license is good through the end of the year.

That’s because the state can't yank someone's license, even if they're convicted of a serious crime.

They have to go through a process.

A judge here at the Volusia County courthouse found Maxwell guilty on eight counts of possession of child porn, and forced him to register as a sex offender.

Records show Maxwell spent a week in jail after his initial arrest on the felony charges.

The complaint from the health department read, "Eight counts of felony possession of child pornography...is a crime that relates to the practice as a paramedic."

The complaint recommends a penalty, including "permanent revocation or suspension of respondent's certificate."

State records show Maxwell's paramedic's license is clear and active, and is valid through December.

Florida law outlines disciplinary procedures for paramedics guilty of crimes, but doesn't specify a time frame for taking action.

It’s not clear where Maxwell worked as a paramedic, but he was living in DeLand when he was arrested.
