ORLANDO, Fla. — An Oviedo family claims an iPhone 6 burst into flames and burned one man's hand and when Apple wouldn't replace the phone, they called Action 9.
“Oh, my God. Smoke is coming out of the phone,” said Myrna Reyes.
Reyes was having a family party when her nephew's phone started smoking then went up in flames.
“I can't believe what happened. It was just a 2-month-old phone," she said.

Her nephew, Edward Ortiz, said it was a scary situation.
“I was in complete shock. I was in complete shock," he said.
Ortiz said his hand took several weeks to heal from burns. He said he thought Apple's warranty covered a replacement.
Reyes sent pictures and documents to Apple, but, "They say it's not a defect of the phone, but I don't believe it."
There are other iPhone fire cases around the country but not many.
Recently, a Phoenix man claimed an iPhone 6 caught fire in his pocket, causing a leg burn.
Customers reported 81 iPhone fires or battery expansions to the Consumer Product Safety Commission since 2009.
Action 9 showed an Orlando cellphone repair company Ortiz’ burned phone. Technician Billy Hendrix blamed a battery malfunction.
“It's a battery acid. It can explode or catch fire, any of that," the expert said, though he couldn't say if it was a defect or the phone was mishandled, so a warranty claim would be difficult.
In other fires, Apple suggested unauthorized parts or repairs caused problems.
Action 9 asked about Ortiz's fire, and Apple told Action 9's Todd Ulrich they are going to investigate the claim again.
The family has filed a complaint with the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
