All aboard: Record weekend expected for Port Canaveral

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. — Some 50,000 cruise passengers are expected to pass through Port Canaveral Friday ahead of Christmas weekend and what officials said will be a record-setting holiday season.

One of six ships will be heading out of the port before Christmas.

“I’m grateful because of the fact that people are snowed in and … understand how grateful (it) is to be in the sunny weather and not be snowed in,” said cruise passenger Adrienne Smith, who also packed for a big chill just in case.

Canaveral Port Authority said it anticipates another 51,000 passengers will arrive on Saturday, which would be a single-day record for the port.

The port expects to shatter its own Christmas Eve passenger record on New Year’s Eve when some 57,000 cruise passengers pass through the port.
