Apopka man rams car into police cruiser after traffic stop

APOPKA, Fla. — An Apopka man is facing a long list of charges after he led police on a chase and crashed into a Melbourne police car.

Melbourne police tried to pull Brandon Culver over for speeding on Parkway Drive and U.S. 1 Saturday morning.

Police say he stopped his car but got out and took off running.

Officers chased him on foot, but Culver made it back to his car and used it to ram into the patrol cruiser.

"This is a non-criminal traffic infraction, which has now escalated into a life and death struggle for the officer," Melbourne Police Lt. Byron Barnes said.

Culver sped away and officers had to use stop sticks to catch him.

Police said Culver's license had been suspended more than 20 times and he has a criminal history.

Culver is in jail and his license has been revoked, police said.
