ORLANDO, Fla. — UCF has been fined $100,000 by the Big 12 League for a viral vulgar chant some students made during last week’s football game against Brigham Young University.
Students could be heard yelling “F the Mormons” loudly just before kickoff and well into the third quarter, according to one student who attended the game.
“I wasn’t in the student section,” said Trevor Lawson, a senior at UCF. “I was kind of in the middle section away from it, but you could hear it.”
Campus security removed several students from the stadium after the chants continued despite multiple announcements asking them to stop. “There were like six announcements, so maybe they should have reeled it back a little bit after that,” said Lawson.
The clip was posted on X and went viral almost immediately, racking up more than 200,000 views since Saturday.
“I think it’s unacceptable,” said Logan Hartsom, a junior at UCF. “I think when we go to a school like this, it’s full of opportunity. I don’t think it is okay to be calling out, especially the Mormon church, anything religiously affiliated.”
The Big 12 League said in a statement, “The Big 12 remains committed to providing a respectful environment for student athletes, coaches and fans. Discriminatory conduct will not be tolerated.”
A spokesman for UCF’s athletic department said the school is “reviewing its options” in the wake of the fine.
