Brevard County residents dealing with smelly seaweed

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Some Brevard County residents have noticed an unpleasant smell in the air. WFTV found out that the foul odor is caused by seaweed.

Miles of smelly seaweed have washed ashore from Cape Canaveral down to Melbourne Beach.

Ocean rescue officials said they are not allowed to get rid of it because it's good for the environment.

Experts said it's nesting season and the algae serves as food for young sea turtles and crabs.

"You can see beer tops and everything else in it so it's got a little bit of stuff in there," said tourists Lindsay Brett and Michael Brett.

Officials said the Gulf Stream pushed the seaweeds to shore.

They expect the next high tide, which is on Friday, to wash it away.
