16-year-old arrested, accused of accidentally shooting, killing toddler in Cocoa

COCOA, Fla. — A 16-year-old boy is facing a manslaughter charge after Cocoa police said he accidentally shot and killed a 2-year-old boy inside a Cocoa mobile home on Monday.

Officers arrested Travis Lane, 16, on Tuesday.

Investigators said they believe Lane was handling a gun inside an Owosso Street home at the Sunrise Village mobile home community on Monday when it discharged, killing Brayden Howard, 2.

Investigators said several people were in the home when the boy was shot, and several teenagers were seen running away after the shooting.

Police said the boy and his mother were staying at the home where the shooting happened. Officers said the toddler’s father, Jaleen Howard, was shot and killed during a 2018 home invasion on Peachtree Street in Cocoa.
