Brevard County beach closures vary as weekend begins

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Some beaches will be closed during peak hours this weekend, and others won’t be.

A Brevard County policy group on Friday decided to lift beach restrictions it just imposed yesterday.

The policy group initially planned to close county and city beaches between the hours of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday, since those are the hours the county was most likely to see an influx of beach traffic.

The plan stopped short of closing the beaches altogether.

But on Friday, county commissioners pointed out the policy group, which was formed to handle decisions related to the coronavirus pandemic, made its decision before commissioners had a chance to discuss the issue.

Beaches will now remain open in unincorporated Brevard County. The county’s beachside parks and beachside parking access will remain closed. The city of Cape Canaveral has adopted an educational approach.

A city spokesperson told us, Cape Canaveral has been working with the Sheriff’s Office to make sure the public is adhering to social distancing and not congregating in groups of more than 10.

Cocoa Beach, Satellite Beach, Melbourne Beach, and Indian Harbour Beach will be closing beaches between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and the policy will be strictly enforced by police.
