ORLANDO, Fla. — A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a March shooting in Orlando’s MetroWest neighborhood that left one man dead and another seriously injured.
Eyewitness News reported on the shooting after officers responded to The Palms Club apartment complex on MetroWest Boulevard on March 4.
Orlando police said the confrontation involved Alan Vernon Florvilus, Roderick Barron and Howard Bennett.
Detectives said Bennett and Barron had argued the night before the shooting. During that dispute, Bennett allegedly threatened to shoot Barron and asked Florvilus to come to the apartment complex.
Police said Bennett and Barron encountered each other again in the parking lot the following morning. Investigators determined that Bennett attempted to pull a gun on Barron, but Barron drew his own firearm and shot Bennett before Bennett could fire.
Bennett died from his injuries.
During the confrontation, Florvilus allegedly retrieved a rifle-style firearm from an apartment and opened fire on Barron, seriously wounding him before fleeing.
Barron survived and provided detectives with an account that police said was consistent with physical evidence and witness statements.
Following a review of the evidence, investigators determined Bennett’s death was a justifiable homicide. Barron was not charged in connection with the shooting.
Detectives obtained a warrant on Aug. 13 charging Florvilus with attempted first-degree murder.
The U.S. Marshals Service Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended Florvilus in Tampa on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
The investigation remains active.
