Brevard County Schools offers drive-thru COVID-19 testing for students, staff

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Brevard Public Schools converted the driveway of its Mid-South Transportation Center in Melbourne on Thursday into a drive-thru COVID-19 testing site for students and staff.

“He’s got allergies. He has seasonal allergies. So, I’m assuming that’s what it is,” said Brevard County resident Cynthia Gonzales. “But rather than assume, being as he was home, because there were kids in his class that had COVID, I’m going to have him tested.”

For weeks, Brevard Public Schools have been working to help expand access to COVID-19 testing.

On Tuesday, another 131 positive COVID-19 cases were reported to the district, although volume was likely lower due to the Labor Day holiday.

“We kind of had a reset,” said Russ Bruhn, with Brevard County Schools government and community relations. “We got used to seeing unfortunately hundreds of cases, and now that it’s going down that’s great; but it’s still a lot of cases.”

Student Olivia Salitore wasn’t one of them. She tested negative Thursday afternoon for the second time this school year.

“With school starting, everyone is getting quarantined, and or with work,” Salitore said.

Students and staff can still preregister HERE for testing Friday at the Clearlake Adult Education Center in Cocoa.

“There’s not a guarantee that you can go into some of the traditional places and get a test, and get that test taken care of quickly,” Bruhn said. “So we’re trying to help fill that void.”
