BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A 19-year-old Brevard County man accused of hitting a 15-year old with his car and leaving the scene without helping him been released on bond hours after his arrest.
Authorities say Aidan Perry struck Eric Isaiah Irizarry, who was riding an e-scooter on Viera Boulevard around 3:50 a.m. on June 21st. Investigators say Perry left the scene without stopping to help.
He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.
“He was the best kid ever,” said Deanna Irizarry. “He was lovely, like super, super bright and he loved to make everybody laugh. Our whole family is very angry because maybe Isaiah could have gotten better care faster if that individual would have stopped at the scene.”
A friend of Irizarry’s, who was with him at the time of the crash, told police he narrowly avoided being struck by the same car. Investigators were able to match the car mirror left at the crash scene with data from the state’s Driver and Vehicle Information Database, which led to Perry’s arrest.
Perry’s defense attorney told reporters Perry thought he hit a deer and that Irizarry’s e-scooter was difficult to see. “There were no reflectors, no lights, nothing like that on the scooter,” said Jason Downs. “Unfortunately, my client just didn’t see him. My client did not know that he hit a person. Otherwise, he obviously would have stopped.”
Downs also said Perry was getting ready to join the U.S. Coast Guard. “He’s never been in trouble day in his life and our hope is that the jury ultimately will see that when this case proceeds to trial.”
Perry’s bond was set at $51,000. He is expected back in court on November 17th.
