Brevard Sheriff's program donates hundreds of bikes for Christmas gifts

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — The Brevard County Sheriff's Office held its 7th annual Christmas bike giveaway recently.

Officials said 340 bikes were donated to programs that will pass them along to families who can't afford the gifts for their children.

Walmarts in Titusville, Cocoa, Merritt Island and Melbourne donated more than 300 bicycles.

Brevard county inmates worked to refurbish donated used or damaged bikes from individuals.

According to officials, Waste Management employees saved discarded bikes they found while out collecting trash, and donated them for refurbishing.

Bicycles are donated throughout the year and go to children for birthdays and other holidays.

Since 2006 almost 5,000 have been donated through the program, officials said.
