Bumby Avenue to close for nearly 2 years for drainage project

ORLANDO, Fla. — Drivers who frequently use Bumby Avenue in the Colonialtown area should prepare for a major road closure.

Bumby Avenue will close between Corrine and Colonial drives for a major drainage project that starts April 20.

Message boards have been installed to warn drivers of the impending road closure. It will take nearly two years to complete the project, officials said.

"I'm actually shocked that Bumby is closing," said driver Antoinette Thompson.

City officials said the underground drainage system needs to be fixed. The project will cost the city more than $6.7 million.

Two detours will be set up during the road closure. Drivers will have to take either Ferncreek Road or Hampton Avenue to get around, streets that both go through school zones.

"Oh my gosh that is busy for the kids. So it's more dangerous for the children," driver Marlie Leibowitz said.

The total cost of the project is $1.6 million more than the city expected, records show. The Bumby Avenue road closure will last 22 months.
