ORMOND BEACH, Fla.,None — An Ormond Beach homeowner said her security cameras caught a burglar breaking into her house through the doggie door.
Police said the suspect broke into the home on Valencia Avenue and stole jewelry and a gun.
The suspect lives about three houses down, and has helped the victim in the past because she is disabled.
Dawn Leuck has eight cameras in her Ormond Beach home, but she said she didn't get them to catch burglars -- she only wanted to keep them away. But they didn't faze the man who broke in though a doggie door.
Seeing him in her home, Leuck said she felt violated.
"It's where I come to be safe, that I can sleep all night and… not be afraid because I don't want to be afraid," Leuck said.
On Sunday, Leuck came home from visiting a friend and noticed that someone had broken in, and that's when she checked the cameras.
"I saw a person, you know, going really quickly and pointy head with a hoodie on," Leuck said.
With his face covered, he forced his way into her locked bedroom, but fell down in process. Once inside, he walked to her dresser and spent sometime snooping, then he loaded a bag with collectibles, jewelry, a bottle of vodka, money and a weapon.
"He took my gun, that I had for protection, you know," Leuck said.
Leuck said her cameras were more helpful than she realized. After watching the man break into her home on video, she immediately realized who he was – her neighbor.
"I was very shocked and hurt to see that it was Alex," Leuck said.
That's 25-year-old Alex Wright, who Leuck has known for 10 years because he has helped her from time to time. When deputies questioned him, they found the clothes he used in the burglary, and he admitted to the crime.
Leuck said none of her things have been returned to her yet.
Wright is still in jail and is charged with armed burglary and grand theft.
