South Carolina, Orlando win big at Capital One Bowl

ORLANDO, Fla.,None — The South Carolina Gamecocks beat the Nebraska Cornhuskers 30-13 in this year's Capital One Bowl Monday. It is the first time in school history that South Carolina, coached by former Florida coach Steve Spurrier, has won 11 games in a season.

Thousands of fans visiting Orlando for the game were expected to pump millions into the local economy.

Last week, a record was set in Central Florida when a sold out crowd of more than 68,000 football fans packed the Citrus Bowl for the Champs Sports Bowl.

"What that means is jobs. What that means is a huge amount of money in our community," said Steve Hogan, with Florida Citrus Sports.

He said that the two bowl games and November's Florida Classic combined have pumped nearly $100 million into Central Florida.

Just minutes after Florida State wrapped up its victory over Notre Dame last Thursday, Citrus Bowl workers started prepping the field for the Capital One Bowl.

Hogan was hoping for another sold out crowd on Monday.

"South Carolina and Nebraska on top of Florida State, you can't get much better than that in four days in our stadium in Orlando," he said. "We need more of this kind of activity in the regular season to go with it, so we can really be pumping money into this community and create jobs like we used to in the 90s."

This successful bowl game season could also have a big impact on the future of the Citrus Bowl building.

Hogan is hoping that the success of both bowl games will send a strong message to Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs to renovate the Citrus Bowl.

"Now our two leaders, I think are going to want to in the 1st quarter get together and go you know what, 'Let's get the last one of three venues done," said Hogan.

Hogan said that if leaders make that decision in the coming months, construction could start as early as next January.
