MIAMI, Fla. — Carnival Cruise Line announced on April 2 that its Celebration Key destination in Grand Bahama is the first cruise destination to earn KultureCity sensory inclusion certification. The designation coincides with World Autism Acceptance Month and aims to improve accessibility for guests with sensory needs and invisible disabilities.

The certification follows a six-year partnership between Carnival and KultureCity, a nonprofit organization that creates inclusive spaces for individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and sensory processing disorders. The initiative is part of a broader effort to accommodate families with sensory sensitivities across the cruise line’s operations.

At Celebration Key, more than 400 guest-facing team members received specialized training to assist guests with sensory needs. This training is designed to help staff guide visitors through the vacation environment and identify when individuals may require additional assistance.

Carnival provides complimentary sensory bags that include noise-reducing headphones, fidget tools and light-filtering glasses to block bright or strobe lights. These bags also feature a VIP lanyard with a headphone logo and light bulb symbol to discreetly alert staff that a guest may need extra support. Non-verbal guests can use an included feelings thermometer to communicate their emotions by pointing.

Christine Duffy serves as the president of Carnival Cruise Line. She noted that the initiative includes training for team members both onboard ships and at the Grand Bahama destination.

“This milestone demonstrates Carnival’s dedication to making vacations accessible and enjoyable for all, including families with sensory processing needs,” Duffy said. “By training our team members and offering tailored resources both onboard and at Celebration Key, we ensure every guest feels supported, understood and welcome.”

The certification at Celebration Key expands on fleetwide accessibility efforts that began through the cruise line’s partnership with KultureCity. These efforts include training for shipboard staff and shoreside call center representatives who interact with guests during the booking process.
