HAWAII — Hurricane Lala is lashing parts of Hawaii with wind and rain and could make landfall on the Big Island later today.
The 5 pm EDT advisory from the National Hurricane Center had winds of 75 mph, making Lala a Category 1 hurricane.
Lala is located just south-southeast of the Big Island.
Hurricane Warnings continue for the Big Island of Hawaii, with Tropical Storm Warnings in effect for the remainder of the state.
Lala could make landfall on the Big Island later today and is expected to weaken as it interacts with the island.
Tropical-storm force winds are occurring on the Big Island, and winds will continue to increase during the next several hours.
Some of the worst winds will be in the higher terrain of the Big Island of Hawaii.
Rainfall of 10-20 inches, with isolated 25 inches, is possible across the Big Island.
Lala will then exit the island chain on Sunday and move back into the open waters of the Central Pacific on Monday.
The last hurricane to make landfall in Hawaii was Hurricane Iniki in 1992. It was a Category 4 major hurricane and the strongest hurricane to hit Hawaii on record.
