Leaders to discuss making Howard High School a magnet school

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Howard Middle School is known as one of the oldest schools in downtown Orlando and it could soon be undergoing some big changes.

The Orange County School Board is talking about making the school a zoneless magnet school.

Magnet schools offer programs that focus on a specific career topic and draw students from beyond the designated school zone.

The change would mean many of the students would be moved to other schools in the area.

Everyone, including the students within the school zone, would have to apply to the school.

It’s causing a lot of talk among parents and students on social media, with some saying it’s a good opportunity for the school while others said the move would be elitist.

District officials said it’s a move in the right direction, not only for the school, but for the students’ college careers.

The issue is up for discussion at the next school board meeting on Nov. 20. The meeting isn’t open for public comment, but those meetings will come in the future.
