TIMELINE: Jury deliberating verdict in Markeith Loyd murder trial

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The jury is in deliberations for Markeith Loyd’s second murder trial.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Loyd in the fatal shooting of Lt. Debra Clayton in 2017. At the time, Loyd was on the run for killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon. Loyd was sentenced to life in prison for Dixon’s murder.

6:25 p.m. update

The judge called the jury back into the courtroom and asked them if it would be OK to read back the requested testimony tomorrow morning. The judge says the jury can continue deliberating, but as soon as they get tired they’ll be sent back to the hotel.

6:15 p.m. update

The jury has asked the judge to provide them with read back of testimony from three witnesses, as well as a directory of evidence provided in the case. Court officials are working on gathering both.

4:55 p.m. update

Within a half an hour of the jury heading into deliberations, Loyd complained to the judge about how his attorney handled the case.

Loyd said there were a bunch of witnesses he wanted called, like his niece and police officers.

He said if the officers would have let everyone on the force know that he was afraid of cops and that he was going to turn himself in, that this would have been different.

Loyd said it was law enforcement that put him and Lt. Debra Clayton in danger, not him.

He called the prosecutor a liar, and said his mind started to go blank and he couldn’t answer any more questions from the judge because he was so mad at how everything went down this week.

4:15 p.m. update

Jury sent to deliberate verdict in Markeith Loyd murder trial. The alternate jurors are not being released in case someone gets sick. The judge said they will have to stay through penalty phase.

4 p.m. update

Closing arguments have concluded. The judge is providing the jury with instructions before they begin deliberations.

3:25 p.m. update

The defense wraps its closing arguments. The state is now offering its rebuttal before the case is sent to the jury to decide on a verdict.

1:15 p.m. update

The defense is now presenting its closing arguments.

The state concludes the first half of its closing arguments. The jury is now breaking for an early lunch, and the defense will begin its closing arguments at 1:15 p.m.

The state is resuming its closing arguments.
