ME confirms body found near Ponce Inlet that of missing diver

Ryan Myers

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — U.S. Coast Guard officials said a group of civilians searching for a missing diver off of Ponce Inlet found the man's body Tuesday afternoon.

Officials said the body fit the description of missing Maitland diver Ryan Meyers, but the medical examiner did make a positive identification until Wednesday.

Meyers, Jeffrey Wayne Pries and another man were aboard the Yellowfin fishing vessel Monday when Meyers and Pries decided to go diving.

The crew said Meyers, 28, had 30 minutes of air but never surfaced.

When the Winter Park High School graduate didn't resurface, the crew reported him missing to the Coast Guard in Jacksonville.

A group of civilian searchers concentrated its efforts where Meyers was last seen and found a body after several hours.

Coast Guard officials said the body was found about 30 miles off the coast of Ponce Inlet, in the area where Meyers was diving.

Meyers' family told Channel 9 he was an experienced diver, something the Coast Guard confirmed Tuesday.
