Cocoa woman stuck with bills after robbery victim crashes into home

COCOA, Fla. — A Brevard County woman is out thousands of dollars, because she said a speeding driver crashed into her children’s bedroom.

The crash happened earlier this month on Barclay Drive in Cocoa near U.S. 1.

“It cracked. The concrete block came off. We’re kind of worried about mold since it rains, but this is our kids’ beds right here,” said Elizabeth Smith.

Smith said her young children were inside the bedroom but were standing on the other side of the room when the car hit the home.

The vehicle split the wall, inches from where her children were laying seconds earlier.

“If they had still been in their bed watching a movie, you know, they could have really been killed,” Smith said.

Brevard County deputies said it all started at a nearby park across the street.

Deputies said a man reached into the driver’s vehicle and stole $25 while asking for a cigarette.

The driver sped away and ended up slamming into Smith’s home after hitting a mail box and recycling bin, deputies said.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver got a ticket for having no proof of insurance and wasn’t charged in the accident.

The man in the robbery was never caught.

Smith is stuck trying to come up with the money to clean up the mess, because she doesn’t have homeowner’s insurance.

“We always do the right thing. We do what you’re supposed to do, and we end up with the short end of the stick,” said Smith.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating.
