Cold snap leaves school in need of donations to keep students warm

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The cold snap in central Florida triggered by Hurricane Sandy had one Orange County elementary school looking for help to keep its students warm.

So many children at Fern Creek Elementary School showed up without coats or warm clothes, Principal Patrick Galatowitsch said the school's donation closet is empty.

"A little girl came off the bus, skirt, no socks, just was so sad, no jacket, and she was just trembling because she was so cold," Galatowitsch said.

The school relies on community donations to fill its clothing closet, but while there are a lot of T-shirts and summer clothes, there are no winter coats left.

Danielle Lange, who is caring for seven children, said she's grateful for the community's help.

"I just noticed today we went through three boxes of cereal in two days," said Lange.

Fern Creek gave out more than 20 coats to students Monday.

"A coat gives you that feeling of safety," said Galatowitsch, something he wants all of his students to have as experts predict a colder-than-average winter.
