ORLANDO, Fla. — A mobile service gives homeless people in Orlando a chance for a weekly cleanup.
Each Monday around 2 p.m., Lake Eola becomes a place for the homeless to get what they need besides a meal: they’re getting a haircut and a clean shave.
“Being able to get a haircut, some people have a job interview or just want to look decent. So it's help to them,” said Harriet Singleton, who is homeless and working to get off the streets.
The idea now includes three master barbers from Urban Stylez Barber Lounge, but it all started with one woman giving haircuts in the park.
“It just makes people feel better. It makes a difference in the world. It may be for two weeks, but it's something that we can do. A little happiness for somebody,” said Merina Gray, with ROC Ministries.
The homeless also come for food and toiletries to look presentable.
“It's a way to make people feel better, because if you look bad, you feel bad,” Gray said.
“Every little thing helps. It doesn't matter what it is. For somebody to take the time out of their day to do something to help someone else, that's a blessing," Singleton said.
Gray said she has been providing the services for nearly a year now and says she's happy that hundreds of people have now come to rely on the mobile hair salon.
