Convicted sex offender violates probation by going to water park

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A convicted sex offender violated his probation by spending several hours at a popular splash pad for children and families in Volusia County.

Oscar Castro, 38, spent two hours and 20 minutes at Daytona Beach’s Sunsplash Park while on probation for sex crimes against children, police said.

"It's a place where we bring our kids, so you wouldn't want a person like that around here," father Robert Johnson said.

Police said they found Castro at the park in direct contact with children before he was arrested.

"I don't like it with the splash pad and the playground being here and I have a 4- and 5-year-old son, so I would be uncomfortable with it," mother Jesse Doerhoff said.

Castro was arrested in 2003 in Seminole County for having sex with a 15-year-old girl when he was 26 years old at the time, police said.

Police said Castro is not allowed at parks where kids play, but was found there Sunday with two phones in his pocket.

"I think it's for a bad reason, especially having multiple cellphones. What are you doing with those cellphones?" Doerhoff said.

Castro said he found one of the phones and decided to keep it, but having them also broke the rules of his probation, according to authorities.

Castro was taken to Volusia County Jail where he is being held with no bond.
