Cities, counties provide sandbags for residents ahead of Tropical Storm Colin

Local governments in Central Florida started distributing sandbags Sunday to residents ahead of strengthening Tropical Storm Colin in the Gulf of Mexico.
Volusia County resident David Hughey’s home is in a low lying area and can get inundated during minor storms.
“We get extreme runoff from the roads, down our front yards, around the houses, it starts to wash away our foundation,” he said.
He was picking up his free sandbags, but planned to use even more to keep his home safe.
“I need the sandbags to keep the water where it belongs… I just don’t want water coming in the house,” he said.
As many as 20 free sandbags will be given to New Smyrna Beach residents, but they need to bring their own shovels to fill them, the city said.
Valid New Smyrna Beach ID will be required for the free sandbags.
The region could see as many as 6 inches of rain through Tuesday.

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Lion’s Club president Sandy Hutchings said about two feet of water washed into the club two years ago, causing $10,000 in damage.

“Everything was all ruined from a couple years ago. So we're just basically trying to keep it from happening again,” Hutchings said.

Residents in Osceola County were able to pull up to pick-up locations to collect as many as 20 free sandbags from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.
David Yu was one of several residents preparing for the approaching storm, which could bring heavy downpours, gusty winds and a possible tornado threat to Central Florida.
“I actually didn't expect anything until I was watching the news last night, Yu said. “I guess this thing just kind of popped up and surprised everybody a little.”
Officials in Lake County said fire stations countywide were provided with sandbags to distribute to the public.
“It is hurricane season and we are supposed to get 3-5 inches of rain,” resident Bob Whittmann said. “Since we are new here, I figure we better be prepared.”
New Smyrna Beach officials started giving out free sandbags Monday at 7:30 a.m. at the New Smyrna Beach Maintenance Operations Department, 124 Industrial Park Ave.
The giveaway would continue to until 4:30 p.m., the city said.
