COVID-19 cases more than double since beginning of month in Lake County

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — COVID-19 cases are on the rise in Lake County, where case numbers have more than doubled since June 1.

Over the past two weeks, there have been double digit positive cases every day.

The Florida Department of Health testing site in Leesburg was packed with people Wednesday looking to get tested.

The testing site had to close early because so many people showed up.

On June 1, Lake County had 304 cases and 15 deaths. Now, more than three weeks later, the county has had 821 cases and 21 deaths.

The spike in numbers has some people concerned.

“I’m concerned but don’t really know anyone that has it. I just hear about it,” a resident said.

Some said they believe the numbers are on the rise because people aren’t listening to health experts.

“I think the mask helps. I think social distancing helps. I think everything they’re doing plays a role in helping. We just need to do our part,” a resident said.

The Department of Health is urging people to continue following precautions, including wearing masks.

County officials said they’re cosigning what health officials are saying, but so far, there are no plans to require people to wear them.
