Daytona Beach Main Street Pier reopens

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The iconic Daytona Beach Main Street Pier reopened on Tuesday, after two and a half years and millions of dollars in upgrades.

Hundreds of people showed up for the historic day.

City leaders said they hope the reopening of the pier will attract tourists.

"We're very optimistic about the impact that this first step will have on our core tourist area and mainly the whole city of Daytona Beach and the surrounding communities," said Daytona Beach Mayor Glenn Ritchey.

James Miles was one of hundreds who set foot on the pier Tuesday. He told WFTV that he played with his band on the pier in the 60s.

"I just miss the pier because it's like home. I played up here back in the 60s," Miles said. "Matter of fact, we was the only band that was up here three and a half years. We brought them in."

The city used $6 million from taxpayers for making the upgrades, and a private restaurant group put in another $5 million.
