ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Credit and debit card thieves have found a way to target a new group of convenience stores that just moved into central Florida.
Investigators said thieves have been using people's information to pay for gas at Wawa locations near SeaWorld and Orlando International Airport.
Leslie Delgado said she knew there was no way she spent $1,300 on gas when she filled up her SUV.
"I said something is going on because I'm not going to spend that amount of money," said Delgado.
She later learned the charges came from someone using a cloned version of her debit card.
"When I checked my account, I had 16 transactions over the period of a week," said Delgado. "I know I'm not the only one."
WFTV learned that six other Wawa patrons had their debit information stolen.
The company said customer data was not taken from any of its locations.
Most gas stations require you to enter your ZIP code once you swipe your card. But WFTV learned that two of the area Wawa locations didn't require the five-digit numbers when customers paid at the pump.
WFTV reporter Raquel Asa bought gas early Tuesday morning at a Wawa store along Central Florida Parkway and wasn't required to enter a ZIP code.
After a call to the company, she noticed that later in the day the same pump required her to input the zip code.
A company representative said that it didn't require the ZIP code earlier because the stores are located in tourist areas and international visitors don't have ZIP codes.
Delgado is just glad she caught the issue before it was too late.
"At least they are aware of it, and they are taking care of it so no one will be victimized like me," said Delgado
A Wawa corporate representative told WFTV it is now requiring a ZIP code at each of its five local locations when drivers purchase gas at the pump.
